Eagles Rally Big, But Fall On Senior Night
Elgin, IL - The Eagles had their final home match of the season, and held senior day festivities beforehand on Tuesday night. A good crowd turned out to see five seniors recognized. They were Maisie Green, Issy Nick, Regan McEvoy, Mya Williams, and Ariadna Marquez.
Prior to the match, each senior prepared a audio message for their teammates and family, which was a nice touch on the night.
For the game, the Trolls took set one 25-22, before the Eagles responded in set two winning 25-21.
Mya Williams led the Eagles with 10 kills on the night. Fellow seniors Maisie Green and Ariadna Marquez added seven each.
It was also a big night for junior Alina Romero. Before the game, Romero was recognized for reaching the 1,000 career assists mark with a nice ovation. Romero's last two seasons have been stellar for the Eagles, with this season being really strong, leading her teammates as the primary setter. On the night, she had 18 assists, and an incredible seven service aces. JU had 15 aces in all, with seven coming from Romero.
Senior Regan McEvoy added 13 assists.
It was great to see senior Issy Nick back in uniform and out on the floor on this night. Nick has missed the entire season due to a leg injury, and it was great to see her be able to put on the jersey and get a few serves in throughout the night. She even added two aces for her team.
The excitement of the night came during the third set. Trinity had built a 24-15 lead before Judson made an improbable comeback. With Alyssa Burke at serve, JU stormed back with nine straight points to even take a 25-24 lead in the set. Needing to win by two, Judson incredibly had a chance to win the set after being down a huge deficit.
However, Trinity was ultimately able to weather the storm and claim set three 27-25. The Trolls would go on to take set four and the match, spoiling the valiant effort by the Eagles on this night.
With the result, Judson fell to 7-15 overall, and 4-13 in conference play. They will have one final match at St. Xavier to close out the season.
The third set comeback was only highlighted by having two former alumni on the broadcast showing their support for the team. We thank Jennifer (Tynis) Alderson and Lisa (Vazzana) Harrison for their time and support during the night.
