Eagles Buzzer Beater Falls Short
Elgin, IL - The Eagles had their second home game of the season on Saturday afternoon. They welcomed in St. Mary-Woods College for the first of a home and home with the Pomeroys.
The game was an entertaining matinee. The Eagles were down early, but did a nice job of playing defense and battling back into things.
In the first half, what helped JU was that they were able to get into the bonus early in the half, and maintain points from the free throw line. The Eagles went 13-21 from the line to St. Mary's 3-8 shooting.
Guard Hunter Duncan carried Judson in the first half scoring 11 points on 4-7 from the floor.
St. Marys took a 42-39 halftime lead in part to Judson committing 11 turnovers.
In the second half it was Fernando Perez Jr carrying the load as he posted 11 points. However, the advantage that the Eagles had at the line in the first half, unfortunately did not coninute after the break. St. Mary's held them to just 6-8 from the line in the second half.
Still, Judson kept the game tight and were always within striking distance. A 3-pointer from Isaac Hoekema gave JU a one point lead with 12 minutes to play. The Pomeroys quickly took that lead back, and kept the Eagles at bay down the stretch.
JU had the game tied at 74 with 5 minutes to play, and again at 78 all with 4 minutes to go.
Bronson Bartuch had a 3-point attempt rattle out that would have given the Eagles the lead with under three minutes. Needing a three ball in the final minute, both Luke Stoddard and Bartuch missed chances that would have sent the game to overtime.
In the end, the Eagles were one basket short, falling 85-82.
Hunter Duncan finished with a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Perez Jr also had 14 points, Dorien Little had 13, and Luke Stoddard had 11 points as the four players with double digit scoring.
These same two teams will play again on Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary's for the return bout.
