Eagles Move To 2-0 In NCCAA World Series
Kansas City, MO - The Judson Eagles continued their impressive run at the NCCAA World Series on Monday afternoon, moving to 2-0 in tournament play with a commanding 12-4 victory over the University of Fort Lauderdale in Kansas City.
The Eagles once again showed off their explosive offense, collecting 14 hits and scoring in six different innings while getting a complete game effort from Alijah Acevedo on the mound. It is win number 36 for the Eagles on the season.
Fort Lauderdale struck first in the opening inning on a solo home run from Rolando Lujo, but the Eagles wasted little time responding. After Alijah Acevedo singled to start the bottom half of the inning, pinch runner Yasiel Trinidad came around to score when Blake Stempowski launched a two-run homer to left center, giving Judson an early 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles created separation in the second inning with one of the biggest swings of the afternoon. Following singles from Derek Cintron and Kevin Flores along with an intentional walk to Acevedo, Allan Navarro ripped a three-run double to extend the lead to 5-2.
Fort Lauderdale battled back with two runs in the third inning to pull within one, but Judson answered immediately once again. Kyle Schwartz worked a walk and later scored when Derek Cintron doubled to make it 6-4 Eagles.
Judson continued to apply pressure over the middle innings. Stempowski added another RBI in the fourth on a groundout that plated Trinidad, and the Eagles manufactured another run in the fifth behind aggressive baserunning from Matt Armstrong and Cintron to stretch the lead to 8-4. The Judson attack was early and often, constantly filling up the bases all game.
The game broke open in the seventh inning. Alex Wickett started the rally with a double before Cintron delivered another RBI double down the line. After Trinidad stole second and Flores drew a walk, Acevedo cleared the bases with a three-run double to right center, pushing the Eagles lead to 12-4 and putting the game out of reach.
Cintron led the Eagles offensively with a perfect 4-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Acevedo finished with three hits and three RBIs in addition to his complete game on the mound. Navarro and Stempowski each drove in three runs, and Judson stole multiple bases throughout the afternoon to keep constant pressure on Fort Lauderdale's defense.
It may not have been the most perfect outing for Acevedo, but he gutted out a complete game win to advance JU in the World Series. Acevedo went the distance for Judson, striking out four across all nine innings to earn a workman like victory. After Fort Lauderdale scored twice in the third inning, Acevedo settled in and did not allow another run the rest of the way.
With the victory, the Eagles remain unbeaten in the NCCAA World Series and continue building momentum heading deeper into tournament play. They will play Tuesday morning in the 2-0 game. The Eagles are currently one of six teams remaining in the tournament as it heads to the final two days.
